Upon instructions from DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen and the DPP election campaign strategy committee, Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chu (陳菊) yesterday called on former Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌), prodding him into entering the New Taipei City mayoral race. The closed-door meeting between Chen and Su lasted for nearly 50 minutes.

In an interview after the meeting, Su stated that he knew how important and tough the year-end elections would be, but for the sake of the DPP and New Taipei City, he knew that he couldn’t sit idly by. Su expressed his willingness to carefully consider whether to throw his hat into the ring.

According to informed sources, the DPP is slated to convene a meeting of its election campaign strategy committee tomorrow to recommend that Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen draft Su to run in the New Taipei City mayoral race. In addition, a Tsai-Su meeting is scheduled for April 12. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the DPP will convene a meeting of its Central Executive Committee on April 25 to officially approve Su’s nomination as the DPP’s candidate in the New Taipei City race.

On the other hand, since last year, former Premier Yu Shyi-kun (游錫堃) has told the DPP party central several times that he will not run for New Taipei City mayor. In a meeting with Tsai on January 23, Yu also told Tsai he was not interested in running for office.
