 Chen Shi-meng Attends Annual Meeting of Overseas Taiwan Independence Movement Faction, Drawing Criticism

Freshman Control Yuan member Chen Shi-meng earlier this year went to Canada to attend an annual meeting titled "Deep Tilling in North America for Rectifying the Name of Taiwan" sponsored by an overseas Taiwan independence group and delivered a speech at its invitation there on the subject of transformational justice.

However, whether Chen Shi-meng’s act was in conformity with the provisions of the “Self-Disciplinarian Norms for Control Yuan Members,” i.e., “members of the Control Yuan may not engage in activities of a political nature,” would have to be reviewed and decided by the Control Yuan Disciplinary Committee composed of all members of the Control Yuan, which will meet after August.

Sources in the Control Yuan point out that earlier this year, while attending the first informal meeting of Control Yuan members after taking office, Chen Shi-meng did introduce a question, i.e., if invited to attend activities sponsored by overseas Taiwanese groups, would it be in conformity with the rules? At that time, the Control Yuan explained that it would all depend on the specific facts of the cases for determination.
