While Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Guo-yu (韓國瑜) was visiting the US, the media asked his view on the Han vogue. Han indicated that the so-called vogue was merely a pronoun, the key factor being the change of people’s mind. Han said that the three ROC Presidents in a row were all alumni of the National Taiwan University (NTU) School of Law, stating that they impaired Taiwan’s economy and competitive edge. Han added that if the phenomenon of the Han vogue had a little significance, it was to remind ROC politicians to be service-oriented rather than struggling for power by means of mud-slinging, distortion of facts and rumor-mongering.
President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) responded on her Facebook page that boosting Taiwan’s economy required more than slogans, saying that improving Taiwan’s economy, innovating industry, attracting foreign investment were crucial, and she had done all of them. Tsai said that even the International Monetary Fund (IMF) hiked its forecast of Taiwan’s growth rate for 2019.
Regarding Han’s criticism, the office of Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) stressed that during Ma’s terms, the financial tsunami and the European debt crisis occurred, but under the efforts of Ma’s team, Taiwan weathered the storms, maintaining an average growth rate better than other countries.
