Premier Su Brags about His Accomplishments, but Netizens Call It Fake News

April 18, 2019

Yesterday, Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) posted his accomplishments on line@蘇貞昌 to people that the amount of exports in March 2019 rose to US$ 28.68 billion, the second highest in March in history. However, some netizens found that many media reports indicated that the amount of exports in March 2019, was indeed the second highest for March in history, but the Finance Ministry made public that compared to last year, the export amount of Q1 fell by 4.2 percentage points. Su only talked about the export amount in March but deliberately avoided mentioning the warning sign that there was a decrease of 4.2 percentage points in Q1. Su apparently padded his economic accomplishments.

The government has made a supreme effort to fight against disinformation. At the end of last year, the Cabinet adopted, in its regular weekly meeting, draft amendment bills to seven laws on the subject of disinformation prevention, and today it is slated to adopt the draft amendment bills to the Criminal Code, the Criminal Code of the Armed Forces, and the Plebiscite Act so as to prevent disinformation. Nonetheless, was Premier Su’s statement a truthful report based on limited and incomplete information? Or were the news stories by most media outlets disinformation because they differed from Su’s?
