Since the Mainland and the Vatican signed an interim agreement on bishop appointments last September, relations between the two sides improved and became more amicable. The Holy See confirmed that it had been invited by Beijing for the first time to participate in the Beijing International Horticultural Exhibition 2019, to be held for a period exceeding five months from April 29 to October 31 and that it would set up an official Vatican exhibition pavilion.

Yesterday, Lu Kang (陸慷), a Mainland Foreign Ministry spokesperson, confirmed the preceding news at a regular press conference on April 18, 2019. According to a report by the Hong Kong Economic Times, Mainland-Vatican relations have become warmer, and Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, the President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, will preside over the opening ceremony of the exhibition venue of the Holy See on April 29. Cardinal Ravasi indicated that the Vatican’s participation aimed to create atmospherics conducive to dialogue.
