After taking up the petitions filed by 38 legislators for judicial review on the constitutionality of the new or newly-amended pension reform laws for military, civil servants and public school teachers, the Council of Grand Justices (CGJ) of the Judicial Yuan completed the pre-trial hearings separately for the three cases. Yesterday, the Judicial Yuan stated that the CGJ, sitting as the Constitutional Court, was slated to conduct hearings for oral arguments on June 24 for the military pension reform and on June 25 for the pension reforms of civil servants and public school teachers.
In accordance with the provisions of the Constitutional Interpretation Procedure Act, the CGJ shall hand down a Constitutional interpretation within two months of oral arguments, i.e., on August 23 at the latest in these pension reform cases. As the 2020 Presidential election is less than five months away from the deadline of August 23, it will be worth noting the impact of the judicial review outcomes on the Presidential race.
