Taiwan’s diplomatic ties with the Solomon Islands are unstable. Reuters reported on June 24 that Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare set up a “task force” on Taiwan ties, and that a seven-member delegation would not only visit Beijing and Taipei, but also visit the island nations of Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Papua New Guinea, which all had formal ties with the Mainland. The aim of visiting these nations was to find out what situations they were in after they forged diplomatic ties with the Mainland, evaluating whether the Solomon Islands should switch its ties to the Mainland.
Task force chairman John Moffat Fugui revealed that the delegation would depart on June 27 at the earliest.
On this matter, Andrew Lee (李憲章), spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), indicated yesterday that currently, we did not have further information about the Solomon Islands delegation, and that MOFA would understand the matter further and monitor the delegation’s moves, providing timely reports to the public.
