August 21, 2019
On August 20, William Brent Christensen, AIT Director, visited Kaohsiung City and called on Mayor Han Kuo-yu. The US was concerned about the development of Taiwan’s upcoming presidential election and curious about whether or not Terry Gou (郭台銘), Ko Wen-je (柯文哲), or Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) would enter the race. The US also expressed concerns about Han’s choice of a running mate. With regard to Han’s trip to the US later this year, Christensen stated that the US would be glad to see it happen.
Additionally, the future development of cross-Strait relations also caught the US attention. Han hoped that Taiwan, in principle, would maintain a balanced and amicable relationship with the Mainland, the US, Japan, and other neighboring countries. Han also stated that in the future, his national policies advisory group would formulate concrete strategies in the matter of cross-Strait relations.
Finally, Han said that the AIT had officially welcomed him to visit the US, and during his visit, he would promote Taiwan-US relations, meet with overseas Chinese communities, and exchange information regarding business management with entrepreneurs on the US side. The US understood that Han would plan his tour to avoid a conflict with the Kaohsiung City Council’s next session; thus, the US would have full respect for Han’s decision regarding the trip’s timing.
