Former President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) yesterday posted an article on his Facebook page, indicating that Chen Chu (陳菊), Secretary-General to President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), should resign to take political responsibility for the smuggling of cigarettes that aide-de-camps to the President allegedly took part in, which would greatly help President Tsai’s re-election bid.

Chen Shui-bian indicated that from the beginning of the cigarette smuggling case to date, not even a single senior official has taken responsibility, resulting in continuous controversy.

Chen Shui-bian stated that politically appointed top executives should take political responsibility and resign. He went on to explain that doing so was neither for criminal accountability owing to offences, nor for administrative responsibility out of the negligence of supervision, adding that this was for the big picture, “soothing popular grievances and calming the storms.”
