In a talk given before the American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei (AmCham Taipei) yesterday, Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), Kaohsiung City Mayor, also the KMT’s official presidential candidate, criticized the Tsai Ing-wen government for impetuously attempting to achieve its policy goal of a nuclear-free homeland,  causing many serious problems. Han stated that if elected President, he would de-mothball and activate Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) No. 4 “with agreement of the people and under safe and secure conditions.”

In addition, Han also lambasted the DPP government for governing the nation based on ideology and for being politically-oriented in its past three-year governance, leading to economic stagnation in Taiwan. Han went on to say that the government’s moves to amend “five acts concerning national security” not long ago and to push for an amendment bill to the Statute Governing Relations Between People across the Taiwan Strait regarding “agents for the CCP” might undermine freedoms of speech, the press, and assembly.

Han expressed appreciation for AmCham Taipei’s long-term support for the Republic of China (ROC), saying that the US was Taiwan’s most important friend and security partner, and AmCham Taipei also was one of Taiwan’s most important investors. The ROC would always be the US’s staunchest and closest friend and security partner, Han stated, adding that “We will always stand with the US.”
