Tsai: Doctoral Degree and Dissertation Can’t Be Fake

President Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) doctoral dissertation has caused quite a controversy. Yesterday, Tsai indicated that her doctoral degree and dissertation were both true. With regard to why her dissertation was archived 35 years later, without her advisors’ signatures, Tsai responded that her dissertation was handled in accordance with her university’s regulations at that time. As to why her dissertation could not be borrowed, printed or cited, Tsai replied that those rules were not made by her, and she was also interested in the rules.

Pao Cheng-Hao (包正豪), Dean of the College of Global Development at Tamkang University, indicated that to publicize one’s academic research was the fundamental approach of what contributions the academia could make to society, but it was inconceivable that we had to overcome so many obstacles and restrictions before succeeding in borrowing Tsai’s dissertation.
