On October 10, Kaohsiung City Hall held the first flag-raising ceremony to celebrate the National Day of the Republic of China (ROC) in 12 years. When delivering remarks, Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) lambasted the DPP for unscrupulous corruption, abuse of power, and an arrogant government, adding that what the people in Taiwan needed the most was not a sense of losing one’s country but a sense of security. Han also stated that if he had the chance to serve as president in the future, his premises would be to prioritize Taiwan, insist on freedom, safeguard democracy, and develop Chinese culture, adding that he would even create an environment for peaceful and stable development of cross-Strait relations.
In addition, Sean Lien (連勝文), a member of the KMT Central Committee, questioned that Taiwan was much better off under KMT governance, how come now the country would soon perish under DPP governance. President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) responded on October 13 by saying that the sense of losing one’s country was hyped by the KMT, adding that this was political hype.
To Tsai’s remarks, KMT presidential candidate Han Kuo-yu indicated that the current sense of losing one’s country felt by the people in Taiwan was simply the product of Tsai’s maladministration and misconduct, adding that troubles were made by Tsai, but the people in Taiwan had to bear the burden.
