TAO Says Rocking “1992 Consensus” More Difficult than Rocking a Mountain

President Tsai Ing-wen called on the Mainland to interact on the basis of “peace, parity, democracy, and dialogue”. Yesterday, Ma Xiaoguang (馬曉光), spokesperson for the Mainland’s Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO), responded with four points:
First, the “1992 Consensus”, which embodies the “One China” principle, should be adhered to.
Second, forces supporting Taiwan independence and splittism must be strongly opposed.
Third, moving the Taiwan Strait towards peace and stability is unstoppable by anyone or any force.
Fourth, the future of Taiwan should be decided by the entire people of China.
Ma stressed that rocking the “1992 Consensus” would be more difficult than rocking a mountain, adding that the “1992 Consensus” originated from respective provisions of both sides.
It seems that Ma’s statement has allowed the “1992 Consensus” to return to where it was with more room for interpretation.
