Since President Tsai Ing-wen won re-election, Beijing has strengthened its suppression of Taiwan in international living space. On January 18, after PRC President Xi Jinping concluded his two-day-long state visit to Myanmar, the Mainland’s Foreign Ministry made public on its official website the Chinese version of the China-Myanmar joint statement, saying that “Myanmar reiterates its firm commitment to the One China Principle and recognizes Taiwan as an inalienable part of the PRC.” This is the first time for such statement to be made in Bejing’s joint statement with another country, as the past joint statements between Bejing and other countries always said “Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.”
With regard to the China-Myanmar joint statement, the ROC Presidential Office responded on the same day by saying that China’s forceful push for its “One China Principle” would bring nothing but undermine cross-Strait ties as well as regional peace and stability, which the international community would not be glad to see.
In addition, the KMT also expressed regrets over the joint statement, stressing that “Taiwan is definitely not a part of the PRC,” urging the Mainland authorities to face pragmatically this reality.
