Bailout 3.0 to Be Launched by End of Month / Tourism Industries: Too Late

Yesterday, the Cabinet proposed a “bailout program 3.0” with a supplemental special budget bill amounting to about NT$200 billion (approx. US$6.8 billion), in an attempt to salvage the manufacturing sector as well as the tourism and transportation industries. The bill was expected to be sent to the Legislature in two weeks and the program to start before the end of July. However, many in the tourism-related industries candidly said that by the end of the month, more hotels and travel agencies might have to lay off employees or close down.
The Travel Quality Assurance Association urged the government to implement both the “bailout program 3.0” and “travel bubbles” as soon as possible, adding that Palau, New Zealand, and Guam were all extending a welcome hand to Taiwan.
The KMT held a press conference yesterday along with figures from the tourism industries, who also called on the government to open borders to some foreign cities for two-way tourism as well as to provide a precise timeline for the “bailout program 3.0”.
