Why Did Every Arrow Tsai Shot Boomerang?

United Daily News Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan, ROC)

July 12, 2017

 Translation of an Except

Why did every arrow the Tsai government shot for reforms always boomerang and hit itself? There are a few reasons: One, pretty slogans are too numerous and too little sophisticated thinking. Two, it has too many impulses in the pursuit of immediate gains, and insufficient perception and knowledge of long-term development. Three, the desire for pomposity is too great, but the capacity for realization is too little. Summing up the three, in reality, it is that "power" and "capacity" are greatly out of proportion: too much power, too much desire, yet not enough capacity to measure holistic priorities and weigh the benefits and shortcomings, gains and losses.

Take Chen Shui-bian for incidence. This felon convicted for corruption has been on medical parole; he daily challenges the public authority, trampling on the dignity of the judiciary, while the entire Tsai government, on the other hand, pretends that nothing had happened. The ruling party is blatantly undermining the judicial system, on the one hand, and keeps talking about judicial reforms, on the other. Do the people really believe it? When China Airlines flight attendants went on strike, Tsai Ying-wen allowed China Airlines to accept all demands of the union, showing endless sympathy and generosity on the part of the powers that be. In return, China Airlines has incurred serious losses, while rumors have been circulating that China Airlines is assessing whether to scrap the Taipei-New York route. In the amendment to the Labor Standards Act involving "one mandatory holiday, one flexible day-off," the Tsai government, oblivious to the different characteristics and scales of industries, embellished the move as "caring for workers"; in actuality, both management and labor have become victims.

With regard to the "forward-looking infrastructure construction," this is the only plan the Tsai government focused on "economic development," and not reform for the purpose of "doling out spoils." In theory, it should have received enthusiastic welcome from the populace, but why does the majority of public opinion, on the other hand, opposes it? The reason is very simple. Even an ordinary citizen can clearly see that this big-headed, big-brained plan is in actuality a product of wonton jerry-rigging and hodge-podge; nobody could see any "forward-looking" strategic vision.

Being able to see other’s problems, but not her own, is President Tsai's major defect, hence, making mistake after mistake in her decision-making route. Obviously seeing that the problem is lying before its eyes, yet not willing to face and solve it with good faith, is the shared psychological barrier of the entire ruling party, endlessly losing popular support amid self-imposed blindness. The arrows that Tsai Ying-wen shot would finally boomerang onto herself.
