Tsai Ing-wen Would Better Change Her Mind Instead of Looking for a New Cross-Strait Model

President Tsai Ing-wen, when attending the “Ketagalan Forum: 2017 Asia-Pacific Security Dialogue,” reiterated her determination to “maintain the status quo” as she talked about cross-Strait relations. Tsai Ing-wen hoped both sides of the Strait would cooperate by using a "new model" to benefit cross-Strait and regional development.

Since President Tsai came to office over a year ago, the foundation for her cross-Strait narrative and policies have not changed. On her political stance, she insists on not accepting the "1992 Consensus," but also stressing at the same time that she would "maintain the status quo." In economics, she would weaken the economic/trade ties with the Mainland, while pinning her hopes on the New Southward Policy. Now, not only Tsai's cross-Strait policies have failed win the Mainland’s trust, the benefits derived from the New Southward Policy have not been able to make up for the losses from the stagnant cross-Strait ties.

At the Ketagalan Forum, Tsai stressed once again the importance of the "Taiwan Relations Act," and indicated that she will devote herself to promoting relations with the US, Japan and other countries of similar ideals. Tsai Ying-wen should understand that if the most fundamental cross-Strait relations are unstable, it is impossible that Taiwan’s relations with the United States and Japan could make any headway. US President Trump’s foreign policy model "holds benefits supreme, relegating morality and justice to the sidelines," while Japan has also decided to catch the last train of the “One Belt, One Road.” Can all this not give the Tsai government some revelations and warnings?

"Actions come from a change in thinking." What the two sides need is not a “new model” but a change in the thinking on the part of Tsai Ying-wen and the DPP. "Hold the state supreme and not political parties; the Constitution is higher than the party charter; consider harmony and cooperation as the foundation, not divisions; set priorities for the masses, and not personal interests.” With a change in thinking, it would be a marvelous contribution on the part of Tsai Ing-wen and the DPP!
