The DPP Repackaging the ROC, Yet the KMT Remains in Dead Silence

United Daily News Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

August 15, 2019

 Translation of an Excerpt

President Tsai has recently frequently declared that she wants to galvanize solidarity between the "Taiwan faction and the Republic of China faction." At the same time, the DPP has also declared that it wants to erect a "grand alliance to counter China and safeguard Taiwan", one of its appeals being "to safeguard the sovereignty of the Republic of China." These advocacies, which in the past belonged to the pan-Blue camp, surprisingly came from the mouth of the Taiwan independence-minded DPP, showing that its strategy on reunification and independence has some shifting, attempting to transform into a policy containing the "Republic of China", allowing it to be incorporated into the DPP’s political spectrum.

The DPP has consistently upheld its stance on Taiwan independence; its long-term narrative includes the following: the "Taiwan Independence Party Platform" of 1991, clearly unveiling that it wanted to use plebiscites to establish a "Republic of Taiwan" and author a new constitution; the Resolution on the Future of Taiwan” of 1995, which limited national sovereignty to Taiwan, only the current national title being the Republic of China. The "Resolutions on a Normal State" of 2007 further introduced that it wanted to change the national title and write a new constitution, making Taiwan a normal country. President Tsai did publicly indicate that "the Republic of China is a government in exile", demonstrating that with respect to the Republic of China in jurisprudence, the DPP only showed an interest, but stood on the opposite side of the Republic of China, because the existence of the Republic of China has hindered the independence of Taiwan.

Now, the DPP has taken an about-face, wanting to "defend the Republic of China"; the main reasons are two: First, "writing a new constitution and changing the national title" is an unrealistic advocacy, even the United States and Japan, which the DPP has been using all efforts to win over, may not support it, and could possibly invite a national security crisis. Second, viewed from the trend of Taiwan's vox populi, whether pro-reunification or pro-independence, supporting the "Republic of China" is the common denominator, while "writing a new constitution and changing the national title" is conversely a minority. For this reason, the DPP’s new narrative on the Republic of China came from coping with realistic political considerations, while cozing up to mainstream vox populi when facing the general elections.

A hole in such a strategy in fact can be poked with little effort. For instance, recently the guidelines for high school history textbooks have been approved; some of the textbooks compiled under the new guidelines directly adopted "the indeterminate theory of sovereignty over Taiwan." If this theory holds water, the jurisprudential foundation of the Republic of China's rule over Taiwan would no longer exist; then where do you derive the so-called "defending the sovereignty of the Republic of China" now advocated by the DPP? Such content of history textbooks in actually was aided and abetted by the DPP; the reason is that in its bones and marrow, "galvanizing solidarity with the Republic of China faction" is fake, and fighting for the swing vote is reality; "defending the sovereignty of the Republic of China" is fake, while packaging Taiwan independence in the empty shell of the Republic of China for "backdoor listing" is real.

The DPP attempts to use the concept of Taiwan independence to displace the Republic of China; it is indeed ridiculous. However, the KMT is seemingly not cognizant of the DPP’s attempts, or it’s incapable of a response, which is even more ridiculous. With respect to the DPP’s twisting the content of the Republic of China and utilizing this move to devour the Blue camp in the spectrum, the KMT to date has not been able to introduce any critiqué or rebuttal. Could it be that the KMT had already abandoned the defense of the Republic of China?
