Even Chen Wei-ting Sees that Taiwan Is Indeed Small

China Times Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

April 21, 2020

 Translation of an Excerpt

Chen Wei-ting, a leader of the "Sunflower" student movement, recently saw the “One World: Together at Home” online fundraising concert to support the World Health Organization launched by Lady Gaga, but didn’t see any Taiwan singers participating, thus he wrote on his Facebook page "Taiwan is indeed small", "Amid this kind of peaceful and harmonious joyous event, I really felt it was truly reality". Perhaps the lament that "Taiwan is small" was not "politically correct", as he later deleted it; he even revealed that with regard to Lady Gaga's high praises for WHO Director-General Tadros Adhanom, only the China Times carried it in Taiwan. The feelings expressed by Chen Wei-ting reflect precisely the habitual publicity approach of Green media outlets, slowly making many people ignorant of the realistic capability of their own, imagining an amazing phenomenon that Taiwan were the center of the world.

Chen Wei-ting’s feelings are too realistic, many politicians and media outlets, for political interests, even operating in the opposite direction brag about how enormous and how great Taiwan is, as if Taiwan were the center of the world, as if the "world" revolved around Taiwan. At the same time, Taiwan is the strategic power that chokes China for the “Free World”, as if the whole world stood behind Taiwan, backing Taiwan and supporting Taiwan, restricting the expansion of "autocratic China’s" influence.

World events are treacherous with changes, Taiwan must clearly understand its being small, using pragmatic thinking and coping with strategies, but never ever being haughty or arrogant, obsessed with a mentality of “egoistic pomposity”, so as not to invite calamity, and fully appreciating what was said in the Chinese classical fiction "Water Margin": "For everything, it is proper to be circumspect and prudent, never resorting to egoistic pomposity".
