 A Pandemic Shatters “Pro-US, Anti-China” Illusions

China Times Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

May 15, 2020

 Translation of an Excerpt

The coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc in the US, and President Trump accuses that the virus originated in China, being the "most serious attack" on the US, more serious than Pearl Harbor and 9/11, adding that the US is assessing punitive measures against China, and the US Congress leveled even more intense charges with scolding. The pandemic situation is still escalating in the US, and the country is countering it with every effort, yet people have time to engage in bitter bickering. This of course has everything to do with the fact that Trump’s shortcomings in pandemic control lead to the crisis for his re-election campaign. Repeated missteps in containing the pandemic on the part of Trump and the US government are a total exposure of US shortcomings, seriously jeopardizing its reputation and status as the world’s superpower.

A pandemic has decimated the illusory and false cognizance of blunder. The communities with Chinese as the main body, especially the people in Taiwan and Hong Kong, should open wide their eyes to look at the reality of the world picture and future trends, rectifying the past biases and bigotry, delineate their past and future, and reconstruct their world view with a lucid vista. Reflecting when facing hegemonic rivalry between China and the US, and then making a wise choice. At a minimum, they should no longer blindly choose sides with the US; after all, the US has already proven that it is definitely not a paradise in the mundane world, nor has it built the ultimate goal of values, not even an active contributor to the world order and welfare of humanity.
