Soon to Be Poked Diplomatic Bubble

United Daily News Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

June 4, 2020

 Translation of an Excerpt

Since the DPP came to power, it has bet solely on the Trump government in its foreign relations, deliberately creating the impression that Taiwan and the United States have cooperated against China, and publicizing to society its brilliant diplomatic achievements and the success of the DPP’s "anti-China, safeguard Taiwan" policy. To the embarrassment of the Trump government in facing social turmoil, the DPP has seemed totally baffled, not knowing how to cope with it.

Taking into account the country’s long-term diplomatic interests, we must issue a serious caveat: not only is the US being severely impacted by the pandemic, the economy is rapidly declining. Improper police law enforcement has led to anti-racial discrimination riots, with society rustling with unease. Trump’s public support has clearly fallen behind the Democrat Joe Biden, and the US political situation is changing. Diplomats need to have forward-thinking and advanced deployment to cope with the possible post-election political developments. We should plan ahead and forge friendly ties, never betting all our chips on one hand or blindly choosing sides; otherwise, if there is a turn-over of political parties in the US, we will inevitably lose room for diplomatic operations with the US.

Taiwan’s international situation is difficult. Since the DPP came to power, 7 countries have severed ties with us, while no Cabinet officers have been held accountable. The Green camp has always used diplomatic breakthroughs with the United States as a cover-up, using gains here to amend losses there to fool countrymen, and hiding the fact that the diplomatic bubble will soon be poked and the crisis that the structure of Taiwan-US relations could collapse.
