When American Values Besiege the Chinese Market

China Times Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

June 8, 2020

 Translation of an Excerpt

The Trump administration advertises “America First,” strangling and tripping up other countries, but the interests of economic and trade relations between many countries and China may be far greater than those with the United States. Who is willing to fight for the United States?

The new coronavirus pandemic has brought a far-reaching impact on the world in all directions; the reshaping of the world order and the unprecedented changes in a century will intensify, accelerate, aggravate and deepen. We can no longer use the pre-pandemic era thinking to fathom the trends of the post-pandemic era. Trump has adhered to the hegemonic mentality of zero-sum thinking, constantly guiding the big power competition to the struggle against China, a mentality that has more and more become isolated in the international community.

Taiwan has its own self-identity and its own pattern of interests in external relations. There is no need to blindly follow Trump. The "Indo-Pacific Strategy" is a hot issue for the United States. The expansion of the G7 attracts little interest in most countries. The so-called "economic prosperity network" has no possibility of being put into practice in reality; in economics and trade, it will hurt Taiwan’s interests. The Tsai government must not be foolhardy, just because of its pro-US policies and forget considerations of its own fundamental interests.
