In this survey, the proportion of respondents identifying themselves as Taiwanese has much to do with the wording of this questionnaire. In this case, the respondents were given two options: either “Taiwanese Only” or “Chinese Only.” They were not given the option of “Both Taiwanese and Chinese.” Hence, respondents are likely to be forced to answer either “Taiwanese” or “Chinese”. Some respondents would not be affected by the wording, identifying themselves as both Taiwanese and Chinese. Given that wording, this survey naturally shows a high percentage of “Taiwanese Only”. Other surveys with the option of “Both” generally show a higher percentage of double identity. (For instance, the survey conducted by the Election Study Center of National Cheng-chi University in December 2006 shows 45% of double identity.)
